Person/Machine

Posted in Life, Gripes, Life, Little joys at 12:07 pm by Krissie

So I’ve mentioned I work at a church, and as a result I occasionally get the “blessing” of working with some not so computer savvy people. Being a computer savvy person myself, this can be a little bit frustrating, and I just had to share my recent experience.

I often recieve emails from people that I haven’t met, as I process lyrics for songs. Now my email address at work is krissiea@ … You know first name last initial - not too complicated. Well this morning I recieved an email from someone who had been given my email address to submit lyrics to. I won’t mention any names, but I will say that this person is well known among children in the church realm - across the nation!

So here are the emails

Hi (I don’t know your name, or if you are a real human being or just a machine), I was given this email address to send the words to the worship songs we will be doing this Sunday.
Thank you for transferring them to whatever it is you transfer them to.
If you need this to be in a different format or any changes (O machine/person), please let me know asap…

HI PERSON/MACHINE,
My apologies, I need to make a song change…

Now I don’t know what about krissiea@ … gave this person the impression that they might be emailing a machine, I’m not sure. Or what makes them think that a machine could do my job, but I found it rather humerous and almost offensive, and had to share.

Being girly, in a man’s office

Posted in Life, Little joys at 11:28 am by Krissie

I work around almost all men. Most of the time this isn’t too much of a problem, but occasionally it’s noticable in two ways - 1) having to hear the gross guy stories and whatnot. It’s pretty rare, and I do work at a church, so I’m sure it could be a whole lot worse, but occasionally I do have to put up with hearing something I’d rather not. In their defense, it’s usually when they don’t realize I’m there. They do a pretty good job of trying to be respectful of the token girl in the office. 2) when I want to be girly and gush over something that’s cute. It’s just not the same, cause they don’t usually get it, but sometimes when I’m really in a bind, I will gush to one of them, and they do kind of appease me, although I think I offended a co-worker one day when I said “since there aren’t any girls around, I’ll show you this cute card that I just bought”. He took it well though, and we laughed about it.

So today, I’m finding myself in predicament #2, and rather than torture one of my male coworkers, I just decided to gush on my blog here. So here is my joy of the day. My new purse!

my new purse

Isn’t it so cute! The leather on it is so very soft, and it has two great outside pockets, I love pockets on purses. So right now, that is what is making my smile today. I know it seems trivial, but I’m enjoying it. And I’m a firm believer in finding the small things in life to be happy about, and right now that is a very good thing.

Perfectionism

Posted in Church, Life as a Designer, Confessions, Mostly serious at 11:08 am by Krissie

I have a confession to make.  I can be a perfectionist.  But not always in the obsessive, work on a project for entirely too long way.  Recently it has manifested itself in the don’t try, cause it won’t be perfect kind of a way.  If I don’t know that I can get an A+ then I won’t put forth the effort to do it.  I’m trying to work on this, and so I have some thoughts to share.  For those of you who may not know, I’m a graphic designer, and I work at a church.

So my thoughts lately have been, it’s okay if there is a flaw in something that I do.  Let it stand as a reminder that I don’t want to be a part of the consumer/materialism culture that is working it’s way through the church.  And a reminder to myself, that the work I’m doing is aimed at those who are truly hungry, for that is who Christ has asked us to reach.  He’s told us to move on from those people who are unwilling to hear - Matthew 10:14; Mark 6:11; Luke 9:5; Luke 10:11 - so we can focus our attention on spiritually feeding and ministring to those who are hungry.

On a side note, in regards to the arguments in the church on being original and creative, and not recreative - I say who cares who’s idea it is - if it’s been used a million times, or never before - strive for what reaches people, and feeds the hungry masses whatever that is.
Disclaimer: I am in no way saying that we shouldn’t give our absolutely best - God deserves that, but what I am saying is that God doesn’t need (or dare I say want) perfection.  We don’t always have to be uber creative, and come up with a perfect piece, God uses us without that.  The key is that our heart is focused on Him, and why we are doing what we are doing, and not on ourselves, and what people will think or say about our work, but that it will move people closer to God.

One C5, no ants please!

Posted in Life, Little joys at 10:17 am by Krissie

There has been an ant epidemic on campus recently here at work. You might be saying, epidemic? really? I’m sure you must be exaggerating. I assure you I am not. I went away on vacation, and came back to find ants at my desk. Luckily, Jared was still around, and during my meeting, went and got some raid for me, and de-anted my desk. My hero! Me and my can of raid have become rather popular around the office. So okay, I can kind of deal with ants in the office, at least now that I have a can of raid. But the problem has persisted, I’ve noticed that the ants outside are completly out of control - if you are outside on campus don’t stand still or you’ll have ants on you - literally - no exaggeration. I have on more than one occasion found ants crawling on me even after I’ve come back inside - not so much fun.

Now this next part is what really tells me that it’s an epidemic, not just a little problem.
I often like to get a French Vanilla Cappucino (affectionately known around the office as a C5), from the vending machine that sits outside in a little cubby by the worship center.  I few weeks back i decided it would be a nice afternoon treat if I got myself one. I plunked in my 50 cents, and the little cup dropped, and promptly filled with cappucino, and ANTS! Ew gross! Luckily there were a few on top, and I didn’t drink any of the ants, because that would be even grosser, but seriously - ants in the vending machine, it’s an epidemic.

So today, I was once again craving a C5 - I didn’t want to risk the ants again, so I stopped by the main office building to get one, unfortunately their little machine was all out, and I only got hot water in my cup, so I decided to brave the vending machine by the worship center once again, and to my surprise - no ants, or at least none that I have seen yet, I’m being a little parnoid as I drink, but it tastes good.
